As he just explained, it's up in the air. Gates has a better story, Super has better gameplay mechanics. Explorers of the Sky is a bit of a middle ground, so /vp/ tends to consider it the best.

The hardest part is always killing the first 100k+ fleet, but if you can rush their core planets you will be good as FEs actually need economy and their core planets have that tech 6 buildings.

Battleships are anything but useless because Alpha-striking the enemy before they can close often decided the entire battle.
That said, I have always made sure my fleets are filled with corvettes and Destroyers; Destroyers act as support artillery and provide PD, while the Corvettes, while usually shit, will eat up shots that would otherwise target the big ships, often overkilling the corvettes (which means wasted damage on their end.)
They're especially useful against Specters, since their small weapons whittle it down by actually hitting the damn thing.
Besides, with a Corvette Yard built, the things are dirt-cheap and super-quick to replace. Battleships are a much larger and time-consuming investment.

The one I am running now is going fine so far. The party had a rough time in the second proper session when they encountered a bugbear, several goblins, and two worgs bullying a woodsman, and the paladin ran into the middle and got set upon by almost all the enemies. In his defense it was a mathematically sound decision though it ended up being skewed heavily in the enemy's favor with her getting critted upon twice in two rounds. They met a monk at the end of the session who was meditating and shit in the wilderness who'll offer to train them if they're capable of it but right now the only one who is is the ditzy druid.

That was one of the few parts of the episode I liked

I was calling "Ashi becomes a sidekick from ep1, still meh about it

The whole Scotsman scene felt weird and out of place. It was surreal how poorly written it seemed to me. Three armies get completely fucked in seconds and Scotsman dies for no reason but meme insults, then gets to be a ghost with no explanation. Did he know that would happen? Was it planned? Then it's not even relevant to the rest of the episode, why show us this now instead of in the episode where it matters?? Why didn't they just tell us 'Scotsman died in battle, but his soul fights on' instead of showing us that very unfulfilling "battle"?

Child soldiers were neat. Very Phantom Pain.

The Ashi torture scene just seemed really poorly done too. If you had the strength to pull yourself out all along, why didn't you do it BEFORE being tortured??? So many other ways she could've escaped using trickery or wit. Why even have the bit where he turns his back on her if not for a moment where she pulls out an ingenious plan or something?

The Scotsman part didn't bother me that much. I feel it was just an excuse for Genndy to get Scotsman back to his younger self so he can curse at Jack more. Was it halfassed? Kinda. Do I want ghost Scotsman bothering the shit out of jack. Yes.

The torture part was a bit lame though. The set up was cool but the fact she could just brute force her way out of there was lame.

Worst Thing about the episode was that the Kids weren't really dead. The whole "misunderstanding" part is such a trope.

Overall though it was still miles better than any other recent cartoons.

You are gonna have some slim pickings!

That being said, there's no shame in being a bit of a one trick pony. As you've learned, being a magician is more about connections than real power anyway. In the books' canon, the Prime Minister is actually a rather smalltime conjurer who is just good at being social.

 No.839417

Oh yeah, I should mention that if you want to play it safer, you might go with foliots instead. They won't have the sheer power that Yix has (which is actually rather substantial by the way), but you can get something with some brains that isn't too dangerous.

I've found that it helps if at least one enemy is equipped with a weapon (as in, something from the weapon selection players have access to), supported by the weaker flunkies used here. Or scrap the flunkies and have a small team of three or four decently-competent enemies.
Another bonus of this is that the players may want to loot those weapons once they beat them.
